From Emaciated to Emancipated: The Story of a Skinny Mango

Ironman Triathlons to ICU Stays. Marathons to muffin Meltdowns. Surfing Wipeouts to Dating Wipeouts...
Zoom in on any of the momentous occasions in Ryan 'Mango' Althaus's life, and you're certain to see someone lurking in the background: his friend, Ed.

Ed's not quite the friend you're envisioning, though. Ed is short for "eating disorder", and he has an obnoxious way of infusing himself into every aspect of Ryan's life - but not for long!

In his debut book From Emaciated to Emancipated, Ryan recounts the moment when he and Ed first crossed paths, as well as the not-so-traditional route he's taken to ditch Ed thereafter. As anyone with their own Ed will know, recovery is a journey of ups and downs. But Ryan's lighthearted approach will encourage and inspire you to join in his quest to reclaim his life, laughter and reason for being - without Ed in tow.

A book for any age, any gender, and anyone stuggling or supporting someone that is.

Of course I wrote a long, heartfelt review that I promptly (accidentally) deleted.

I have had the immense honor of walking and worshipping alongside this wacky mango, and hearing this book read in his familiar cadence made me miss the times we spent together before he moved across the country in search of the sea. We have shared friendship and heartache, and for a time, he even let me share his dog whenever I was in need of canine companionship.

I am so proud of Ryan for sharing his story with such openness and humor. While I have never struggled with our friend named "ED", I have had several people in my life who have. I would recommend this book to anyone who might have a child, a student, or a loved one struggling with disordered eating. This book managed to bring another layer of understanding to what my friend was feeling in the midst of these struggles.

You may actually find out something about yourself.

Ryan is a fun and real writer. To be able to see his path so personal and up close was eye-opening, shocking and beautiful at the same time. I also found out some things about myself. Thank you Mango, life is better with you in it!
