About the author

Adolphe-Théodore Brongniart (14 January 1801 – 18 February 1876) was a French botanist. He was the son of the geologist Alexandre Brongniart and grandson of the architect, Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart. With Jean Victoire Audouin and Jean-Baptiste Dumas, Brongniart founded the Annales des Sciences Naturelles, a peer-reviewed journal, in 1824.


In a first series, thirty volumes were published in the years 1824-1833, under the name of Annales des sciences naturelles; comprenant la physiologie animale et végétale, l'anatomie comparée des deux règnes, zoologie, botanique, minéralogue et la géologie. A second & third series followed.
