Ordinary Heroes: A Tribute to Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients: Reflections of Freedom, Faith, Duty and the Heroic Possibilities of the Everyday Human Spirit

Rate this book
This collection of moving black-and-white photographs of recipients of the Medal of Honor shows not the glory of war, but the underlying spirit and humanity of true heroism. Forty-eight portraits are combined with comments, observations, and statements from the recipients of America's highest military honor. This compilation of words and pictures of men who served in the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marine Corps is both humbling and poignant. Their actions and lives vary as much as the conflicts (World War II, Korea, and Vietnam) and include a conscientious objector who never wielded a weapon and a man known as the "Last Eagle," as he was the last World War II pilot to retire. Each recipient's full official citation is included in the appendix.

Recently read this book and I loved the message from the heroes to all americans that they weren’t superhuman, they were just ordinary people doing their duty. And the book closed with this: “The Medal of Honor Recipients featured in this book invite you to seek the strength and heroism in your own spirit – the hero that you are. They encourage you to embrace your “ordinary“ life, realize your own “wonderfulness of ordinary,” and discover that you, too, can have the courage to be fearless while loving your God, yourself and your fellow man. You have the inner spirit to do your duty, every day.”

Very moving reminder of the price of our liberty. Even though they are rightly recognized for their courage and feats, "They would rather be remembered for the hundreds of other accomplishments they have made in their lives — both the ordinary and the magnificent." They would have readers understand that living "ordinary" lives well is it's own kind of heroism.

A tribute to Medal of Honor recipients still living when this book was conceived and prepared. Brief and moving introduction, then one photo of each subject in his home or home area, accompanied by a line or two from the subject. Wraps up with an epilogue from the photographer. Back of book contains official Medal of Honor citation for each.
