Read Savannahs history through 58 short stories about revenge, exorcisms, graveyard parties, forgotten cemeteries, unsettled spirits, and lady pirates. See over 60 images of Savannah's lovely buildings and statues that are mentioned in the text. Learn tales of the most hospitable city in the South.
This book is ok. It brings to light some not as well known stories, but also skips some of the more interesting stories all together. The author spells some of the homeowner’s names wrong and often mixes up centuries. The writer often claims that something happened in the 17th century, which would mean the 1600’s. Savannah wasn’t settled until 1733 and the stories they are talking about definitely happened in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Thus the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s almost like there was no editor or proofreading done for this publication. Several paragraphs are just repeats of a chapter before like when writing a high school paper and you’re trying to make word count. I would still suggest this book, but if you are wanting to be precise, I recommend an internet search as a backup before you repeat any of the stories.
As another reviewer mentioned, this book should be read before visiting Savannah, as the information therein would greatly enhance your visit to Georgia's first city. As for myself (and probably like most people), I bought this book while visiting the city (and only started reading it after leaving Savannah).
I wish there were books like this for other cities that I've visited (or even lived in)! Such tales really make you look at the city in a different way.
The book is interesting, and I recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in Savannah, but let me add that I think it would benefit from a new, revised edition, in which the spelling inconsistencies, typos (and other, minor issues) would be fixed.
Great book! While visiting Savannah, I was able to see some of the things written in this book. Like 'Gracie Watson', in the 'Bonaventure cemetary'. This is a short read for those touring Savannah, GA and impress your friends while touring the city.
This book is very informative. I suggest reading it before you visit. I purchased the book in Savannah and read it at a later date. It would have helped tremendously if I have read it prior to visiting the wonderful city. I enjoyed learning all the history.
Definitely more folklore than ghosts, this book will hold your attention for those lovers of history as well as the more odd history of the town. Murder, prostitution and ghosts abound in this book, but there is not a heavy amount of just one of them.
