Erwein Graf Matuschka-Greiffenclau directed from 1975 on in 27. generation the family winery Schloss Vollrads. His suicide in 1997 shook the Rheingau and the international wine world. The almost 800-year wine-growing history at Vollrad Castle, which is now continued with a winery in France. The Wein-Graf had mixed up the wine scene with creative ideas and innovative marketing concepts and missed German wine a retreading like hardly any other. The "king" of the Rheingaus shaped the wine philosophy of the region and helped the Riesling to achieve international reputation. The Rheingau wine journalist Wolfgang Junglas documents the life and work of the count sensitively and with attention to detail. The basis is numerous conversations with contemporary witnesses and very first sources from the close environment such as the family, close employees, wine companions, as well as the estate manager and NASPA as a house bank. With this, the author illuminates the multifaceted personality of the wine count and tries to find an answer to the question of his tragic death.
