Music by Bob Johnston and Nancy White; Book by Jeff Hochhauser; Lyrics by Nancy White, Bob Johnston and Jeff Hochhauser
Based on the novels Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island by L.M. Montgomery. Based on the sequel novels to Anne of Green Gables, this new Canadian musical continues the story of Anne Shirley's life. Set in the village of Avonlea and at Redmond College in Halifax, Anne and Gilbert follows Anne's journey to young adulthood and her romance with high school academic rival, Gilbert Blythe.
Firstly, I love Anne of Green Gables and I love musical theatre.
Secondly, I had already listened to the soundtrack and I am very much in love with it (but now I know not all the songs are on the CD and I'm sad because I wanna hear them). So obviously I was going to love this book.
When I heard there was a musical about one of my favorite character and one of my OTP, I had to see it. Sadly, I live very far away, so I can't do this. BUT because of whoever decided to write down the script and publish it, I can pretend I have seen it.
It retrace quite well the events of the 2nd & 3rd books of Anne of Green Gables, even if it's only a play of ~2 hours. I also like the little changes (yes I am mostly talking about this thing at the end).
Now I'm just going to read it again and again and again until I learned every single word of the play, and then perform it all by myself.
Such a fun musical and it was lovely to get to read the script. Anne is an all-time favorite in my family and I was glad to hear some fun songs along with this book. Found the recordings on YouTube and then Amazon music had the whole album.
Anne and Gilbert is based on L. M. Montgomery’s books Anne of the Avonlea and Anne of the Island. I love this musical and I wish I could be in it. I bought the original cast recording a few years ago. I enjoyed music so much that I wanted I could go to Canada to see the show live. When I discovered you can buy the script, I didn’t hesitate buying a copy. If you love the characters created by L.M. Montgomery I think you’ll enjoy this musical.
This play is based on Anne's teaching and college years (and Gilbert's failed attempts to win her heart). It takes some liberties with the original books, but is very charming and often funny. The music is catchy (the play includes the lyrics in the appropriate places, but you need to get a hold of the soundtrack to truly appreciate them). Fans of Anne of Green Gables will eat this up!
I love this play. I've seen it four times in four years and I'm so sad that it could not see it in 2020. I love how they have modernized the story a little bit. Great book to finish 2020 with.
