Legends of the Skyline Drive and the Great Valley of Virginia: Early Tales of Virginia Life

Tucked away among the hills and valleys in and near the Shenandoah National Park and the Great Valley of Virginia are stories of the beginnings of the white man's life beyond the comparative ease of early Tidewater Virginia. These stories are true ones and they depict something of the courage and hardihood of the early Virginia pioneer. Perhaps in reading of their lives we may catch something of the majesty and charm of their surroundings which were reflected to a marked degree in their way of living.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. This little book was published in 1940, so obviously much is outdated, particularly when it comes to talking about “Negro servants” as a euphemism for enslaved people. However there are a lot of interesting stories and descriptions of the Shenandoah Valley, where my mother grew up; still the site of our family reunions. It was fun to read this book during travel to and from one of those reunions. My father bought it in 1950, 3 years after he married my mother. He loved Virginia and ultimately moved there for his last years.

It was an interesting read. Bit more of a history book I thought but had some useful information in it.

This was a second reading of this for me and just like the first time I found it a slow read that was rather boring.
