This is an extraordinary gathering of writings by St. Clare of Assisi, whose reputation is often overshadowed by St. Francis, her friend and fellow religious. Those who are interested in feminist Christian faith will find in her thoughts much to take in, to discern, and to live. Now in maturity, I have found her emphasis on a spiritual simplicity that brings a person to poverty without misery to be renewing in a way comparable to the effect that Henry David Thoreau had on me as a youth.
