Knitters will be delighted by the knitted world of Amy Gaines. Her toys are based on the Japanese craft trend of amigurumi (knitted or crocheted dolls). These very collectible designs are sure to be a hit with Amy's fans-grownups and children alike. This 112-page book features 23 adorable knitted creatures, A Woodland Set-Squirrel, Owl, Mouse, Hedgehog, and Acorn. A Garden Gnome. A Birdhouse with Birds. An Ocean Set-Octopus, Whale, Crab, and Turtle . A set of true amigurumi-style critters-Bunny, Pig, and Bear. Plus, a more realistic group of animals-Sheep, Duck, and Bunny
This book contains 26 designs for amigurumi (essentially, cute little animals). If you can knit and purl, you can probably make all of these! All the projects are rated easy, and there are not too many tricky moves you have to do. The projects tell you what to do row-by-row, and they're easy to follow even for someone like me who's only ever knitted scarves (upon scarves, upon scarves...). It's best for someone who's practiced the basic stitches and is ready for a new challenge. There are a few pages in the back of the book that give some basic instruction on some of the methods used in the projects, but this is not a book that will teach you how to knit if you have zero experience.
Overall, the designs are cute, and the patterns are relatively easy to follow, but nothing really stood out about this book as compared to other amigurumi knit and/or crochet books.
This book delivers on its promise and the patterns are easy enough that any beginner could get into amigurumi for the first time following them. I only wish there were more patterns for the amount I spent on the book ($22) AND I wish there were alternate size guidelines. For instance, say I wanted to make a 6" vs. a 4" owl. Otherwise, it's great. Glad I bought it.
Before this book I had never knitted anything, now I have three adorable christmas gifts for my young nieces and plans to make more from this little book. Amazing!
