With My Rifle by My Side is a story written for young children to encourage an appreciation and respect for appropriate firearm use. It is a charming children's story written in verse that reclaims American values through the perspective of a young boy. The boy enjoys sharing in the experience of hunting with his Dad and sister. He also learns about gun safety as he learns how to shoot his own rifle. After taking part in their outdoor activities, the boy's family learns about our nation's history as they visit American monuments. The boy begins to understand the solemn necessity of firearms as they pertain to America's foundation and the preservation of our liberty. He hears stories that inspire the boy to do his part to preserve American freedom, to protect his family, and to carry on the legacy of the nation's founders. With My Rifle by My Side is a book with colorful illustrations and a delightful story that renews the spirit of American liberty and honor.
This is an excellent children's book. The easy verse and beautiful pictures make it very enjoyable to children in elementary and pre-elementary ages. I like the fact that while telling a story it teaches children about bearing arms. The lesson is that it is a right granted in the constitution, but is a right with responsibility. I think the over all message teaches children that the right to bear arms is special: to protect our homes and land, to hunt - and that this right came at a price. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the author to add many useful tools for parents in the back of the book. These include a page on gun safety tips, names of gun organizations and programs and a copy of the second amendment. As a home school mom I found this to be extremely useful as an additional resource for use in history and government. Although it is written for younger children, it may be used for high school or junior high in the help of understanding this amendment. The simple way it is presented makes it extremely nice. Special thanks to Nordskog Publishing for this review copy. I further recommend their other books in print as they are a publishing striving to provide books and resources to promote a biblical worldview. Home school families would greatly enrich their libraries by adding these books to their shelves.
I haven't read it, but am in awe of the selectively. A rifle? By one's side as a child? Kids need to know what rifles are (dumb machines, just like computers), and that they have their uses, but venerate them? A children's book has a special place in the educational/formative lexicon. When it is read to a child by a trusted adult, or given to the child to read by a trusted adult, it carries massive endorsement of the subject matter. The title speaks to an adult's fears. That's not good. Why not "My dog by my side"? Or "My sister by my side"? Christ said "Fear not." He'd trash this book if he ever saw on displayed on a shelf.
I only wish it were longer! This will be a great tool to help the early education my children will recieve on safe firearm skills and the overall right to bear arms.
