BASIC COMPOSITION FOR ESL combines traditional approaches to composition with process writing through step-by-step explanations, exercises, and strategies. It has been designed for university-bound students or professionals who are studying English as a Second Language yet it is flexible enough to be used by any others wanting to improve their basic writing skills. The text is intended to be used after students have gained rudimentary competence in writing at the sentence level.
The thing that I think that was best about this book was how the information was presented and the tasks were organized. While it did get a bit repetitive after the second chapter, the difficulty of each writing style seemed get more and more difficult at an appropriate pace.
Also, the different grammar patterns and sentences structures that are related to essay writing were spread out through the entire book instead of all at one time at the beginning. Additionally, they were introduced at appropriate times because they were related to the writing objective, they built upon the previous grammar point or they were more difficult than the proceeding grammar pattern.
I did find some of the explanations very helpful, especially the part on noun clauses. I was able to use some of the information in this book to improve upon the noun clause lessons in my grammar classes.
For my current school, this book wouldn't fit very well into our curriculum since each of our sessions are only two months long and this book would probably require a full semester or two. Also, most of the students at our school, which is in Korea, have learned English for many years but have never really used the language. I think some of the expectations of this book might be a bit overwhelming for a student who has English knowledge, but doesn't know how to think or produce in English.
