Rate this book
Become a master raised bed gardener in no time with the easy-to-
follow steps outlined in this comprehensive guide.
Do you want to start a garden, but you are overwhelmed and are not sure where to even
begin?
Are you looking for an easy way to grow your own food at home that doesn't require
hours upon hours of upkeep?
Do you dream of eating fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and other veggies grown by your
own hands, but you worry that you do not have enough space for a garden?
If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, you have come to the right place!
The price of everything has been on the rise over the last few years, and produce has
been no exception, with the cost of farm produce rising 12.7% in July of 2022, which
was a whopping 61.5% increase over the prices of July 2021!
What’s more, is that you cannot be sure what chemicals are on the fruits and vegetables
you buy from the store. Strawberries and tomatoes, two favorites in most households,
have been on the list of the “dirty dozen” fruits and vegetables for the last few years,
meaning they have the highest levels of detectable pesticides on them.
And buying organic doesn’t mean your produce is free from pesticide residues! The only
way to truly know what is on your food is to grow it yourself, and what better way to get
started than with raised bed gardening?

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/

While this is a very upbeat and motivating book by an author that clearly loves gardening passionately, it is also very text heavy with very few images or much in the way of graphic design. The focus is on the plants, however, with a very friendly set of instructions and guides on how to grow them (rather than focusing on the construction of the beds). As such, I feel this book is ideal for those who have access to pre-made raised beds from the local nursery or building supply store.

The book breaks down as follows: Why raised bed gardening, Success is in the planning and preparation, Time to build your raised beds, Planting basics, Companion planting, compost/living soil/multi/fertilizer, dealing with common diseases and pests, Other beneficial information. These chapters include everything from companion planting, harvesting (by type of plant), mulching, natural pesticides, soil testing, compositing, seeds or seedlings, when to start planting, types of raised beds.

So yes, there are sections for constructing the beds. But they are all text and the directions can be very vague (e.g no real recommendations on the type of wood). I've seen other books that give precise measurements and tools but this is far more vague. It would also help to have actual photographs of either the steps or the finished products, neither of which are here.

In all, it is friendly and the love and passion for gardening comes through. But it is a text-heavy book that could really use images and illustrations to get the points across and make it truly beginner friendly. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Although the description of the book is almost a total synopsis of the contents (and a bullet journal), this is a great book on raised bed gardening that will get you wanting to grow your own veggies and fruits as we all know how expensive they are at the grocery store.. Great instructions and you can even apply the information here if you want to start out smaller in a container or hypertufa.

Already on our shelves and already being checked out.

Raised Bed Gardening For Beginners is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to start a garden. The author, Isabel Mills, has created an easy-to-follow guide that covers all the important aspects of raised bed gardening, including choosing the right location, building the bed, and maintaining healthy soil. The step-by-step instructions make it easy for even the most inexperienced gardener to get started. Overall, this book is an excellent resource that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in growing their own food.

I used to stink t gardening. It wasn’t me, but rather the local terrain and clay in our soil. I’d given passing thought to biased beds, but really didn’t know where to start. But the taste of those fresh veggies in the Summer was enough to make me reach for this book. I’m glad I did!

It can really seem overwhelming, but this book lays everything out and takes you through how to get there. With clear and easy to follow instructions that cover everything along the way.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

There is always something new to learn from gardening books, and this one is not disappointing. The construction and filling raised beds and containers is well presented here with simple pointers and tips for any gardener, especially those wanting to try year-round growing. Excellent book!

This self published book has only 5 or 6 photos in the entire book (and they are nothing special). This is all information you could just cut and paste from the net. I’m really sorry, but I’d be unhappy if I paid money for this book. There are so many better books on the topic.

Thanks NetGalley for an advanced digital copy for review. All opinions are my own.

This book provides a great foundation on how to get started with raised garden beds. The book is structured like a how-to manual with good coverage on soil quality, crop rotation, watering and companion planting. I would have liked to see more photos and design sketches for the layouts.

Raised Bed Gardening For Beginners is an invaluable resource. I have been thinking about starting a garden for years. This book has inspired me to finally start my garden and it will hopefully guide me as I move forward this spring.

The book is well-organized and easy to read. The step-by-step instructions will make it easy to get started. The Table of Contents with page numbers will make it easy to use as a reference in the future.. I plan to use drip irrigation that was described in detail in Chapter 2. There is a Wrapping it up section at the end of each chapter that provides a quick summary of what was covered in that chapter.

There are recommendations for where to put your raised bed, best size, how to build, planting basics, soil information, when to plant, watering, companion planting, how to compost, mulch, best organic fertilizers, dealing with pests, when to harvest, options after harvest and winter care,

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This is a good book for gardening in raised beds, but it does not have as much information as you would expect about construction. There is also the lack of photographs. For just the gardening section, this isn't as bad, but the construction section could really use pictures.
I would suggest this more for someone who is already familiar with the topic due to the text-heavy nature of the book.
