Historic Photo Journal, 1872 to 1964 of Glen Canyon of the Colorado River, Utah and Arizona. This beautiful canyon was drowned by the building of Glen Canyon Dam, January, 1963. This book takes us back in time to visit the canyon as if we were on the river with photos and quotations from more than 50 different contributors. It also includes a map of Lake Powell Reservoir marked as a guide for today's visitors to compare Lake Powell of today with the Glen Canyon of yesterday.
I bought this book in the Zion National Park bookstore on my way to (gasp) Lake Powell to go house boating with my family. Innocence lost - my education began. I became very unpopular on that trip showing everybody what Glen Canyon SHOULD look like - and this book started me on my obsession with the IDEA of Glen Canyon - one of the world's sacred places. (see also, Desert Solitaire, All My Rivers Are Gone, etc.) This is a terrific collection of photos that will make you cry because you'll never ever see this canyon as it should be... As you've probably heard about the "hidden national park" revealed as the waters of Lake Powell recede and expose things some of us have never seen. It made me think of a book I read in 1995 and I decided to take another look at it. It was compiled by Eleanor Inskip and features photos of several places that were covered when Lake Powell filled. Each picture is accompanied by extracts from journals, books, correspondence, and other works to give a perspective on the place and its meaning. People who explore the lake today might want to take this book along and enjoy the photos, compare with what you see, and feel the emotions expressed by people whose lives were shaped by their Glen Canyon experiences.
