Since ancient times, God has used symbolism to teach messages that words simply can't express. But how can you find those messages without a basic knowledge of gospel symbols and their meanings? Experienced gospel teacher Mark Shields is here to help with a wealth of insight that will enhance your study of the scriptures, increase your understanding of the ordinances and ceremonial practices of the biblical Church, and show you how to look for new levels of understanding in the words and rituals you might be taking for granted. With a clear, easy-to-understand approach, this book seamlessly weaves ancient scriptures with modern insight to teach you and your family the precious gospel truths that can only be found in symbols.
I'm so happy someone out there has more understanding than I do, so I can use these resources to deepen my knowledge and understanding. I truly enjoyed studying this book. Shields made symbolism fairly easy to understand. It peeled back another layer for me as I continue to feast on the Bible and Book of Mormon.
Heavenly Father and the Savior have given us symbols in the things they've created for us, to help us know them better.
I read this a year or so ago but it doesn't look like I put it on GoodReads until now. Mark Shields has done his homework and explains gospel symbols and their importance in a way we can understand. The topics are deep and take some time to absorb, but the overall message of learning to understand symbolism and finding Christ through those clues is absolutely essential to our conversion and to obtaining our full endowment and reaching our true potential.
The author brings a considerable insights from a variety of sources. From one who tends toward literal interpretation, I am moist grateful for these insights.
The meaning of the symbols in LDS architecture and in the scriptures become clear and understood. Their history and .meaning now open the mind to their true significance. A book that needs to be read by all those who seek God and truth. Wonderful book!
I have been reading this for most of this year and it isn't a very long book. However, it isn't a book to just breeze through. I learned so much about symbolism from this book and I have been wanting to delve more into this subject for the past few years. I think I could read it over a few more times and learn even more. Mark Shields gives you food for thought on so many of earths symbols that all lead to Jesus Christ. A thought provoking book for me.
Written by my friend, neighbor and bishop. Changes the way you think about the everyday world as it relates to being created by a loving God who looks for many ways to teach, bless, show love and guide us back home. Explains scripturally how many of the ordinary things in the world are symbolic of much more. Recommend!
A look at the many symbols that point to Christ--some well-known and basic (to most Christians), some a bit of a stretch, but also plenty of newly encountered ideas to ponder. Reminds us of the sacred hidden in all the world around us.
Read this book with my husband. It provides great food for thought. Helps the reader understand how all of Heavenly Father's creations point to Jesus Christ.
I give this book a 3.5 stars. I was hoping for more insight, but this book was written simply, without much depth. I enjoyed learning more about the Jewish holidays and their importance.
