This is a happy and chatty memoir detailing the author’s career in the antiques trade, from a teenager helping out his father in the 1910s to becoming a partner in the business, and later operating his own antiques businesses up till 1950. It’s interesting to see changes in world events, technologies and society going on in the background and their effects on business, as the book progresses. It’s not beautiful writing but it’s homely and comfortable - written in the sort of familiar easygoing style of someone telling you stories by the fireplace. At times it does jump from one memory to another leaving you wishing you’d heard more about the first thing than the second... and at times it assumes the reader has knowledge of particular people, objects and styles. Probably far more interesting to those who have interest in antiques and the world of dealing...but overall a nice read.
