Was chosen as one of the best books of 2005 by Ottawa Xpress. This was the book that got me signed to Oberon Press, so it always holds a special place for me.
Edson has a knack for capturing and describing "bad" behavior in his characters in a way that doesn't force the reader to judge (or endorse, for that matter). I really like his ability to illustrate how his characters experience simpler moments, like noticing the sun through the trees or smoke rising to the ceiling. I must admit that I enjoyed The Goon more, but that was a later book, and in that one I can definitely feel his sense for evolving as a storyteller.
The Dirty Milkman has widened my world a bit more by making the East Coast - a part of the country that I've not visited yet - that much more vivid in my imagination. His characters feel like people I know and care for by the end of the story, and the landscape of Saint John is ground that becomes a bit more clearly sketched in my mind than it ever was before.
