Sovereigh Grace, Its Source, Its Nature and Its Effects

From "IN the exercise of his high calling, the faithful ambassador of Christ must not scruple to declare the whole counsel of God--rightly dividing the word of truth,- to all classes of hearers. He must warn the openly wicked man that if he persists in his evil courses, the just judgments of God will inevitably overtake him; he must unmask the hypocrite; he must utter no uncertain protest against the crooked and devious ways of the self-seeker and the time-server. But if he enters into the Spirit of his Master, no part of his public work will be more congenial or delightful than the proclamation of the full, free, and sovereign grace of God, manifested towards sinful men in the gift of His Eternal Son, to be the Saviour of the world. It has been my happy privilege in years past to tell out, as best I could, this wonderful story of redeeming grace. The following pages record the addresses I have given on the various aspects of this great subject. I pray God that in their printed form they may serve to deepen in the mind of the reader the appreciation of this grace, at once so infinite and so undeserved. The chapter entitled -A Chime of Gospel Bells,- though not strictly flowing out of the general subject, is in perfect harmony with it; every note in the chime is intended to ring out the gracious invitation to -Come- to the God of all grace and be blessed. The Dialogues which form the latter part of the book were heard with much interest and profit at some of the London meetings; I think the perusal of them will be helpful in removing many of the hindrances that prevent anxious inquirers from accepting without delay the salvation that God in His grace has provided for the sinful children of men."

About the author

Dwight Lyman Moody was a predominant evangelist, author, and publisher. Raised on a farm in Massachusetts, he moved first to Boston, where he converted to evangelical Christianity in 1856, and then to Chicago, where he prospered in business. He gave up business in 1860 and engaged in missionary work with the YMCA (1861-73).

He founded Moody Church and preached in the slums, emphasizing literal interpretation of the Bible and the need to prepare for the Second Coming. In 1870 he teamed up with the hymn writer Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908), and they began a series of highly popular revival tours in Britain and the U.S. Moody founded the Northfield School (1879), the Mount Hermon School (1881), and the Chicago Bible Institute (1889; now the Moody Bible Institute).

A beautiful book. Seldom is a book both poetic and powerful, poignant and pleasing. This book is both in excess. A beautiful treatment concerning the grace of God. Simply wonderful. I will read it again and again.

The title threw me off somewhat but knowing the author pulled me in nonetheless and the book delivers wondrously. Easy to read, easy to comprehend, and easy to enjoy.

The gospel still the same.

I really liked this book, because it reminded me about the grace of God. Moody preached grace which was the reason why he was such a great soulwinner. Preachers should read this book, to remind them of the saving power of God's message. People seeking salvation. The doubting Christian who is doubting his salvation, and the believer who has lost his way. It was well worth the read!

Grace is A free gift to us from God

God has provided for the sins of His people, committed after they come to Christ, as surely as for their sins committed before they came to Him. Christ “ever liveth to make intercession for all that come unto God by Him.” “If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” . . . . For, “if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He is the propitiation for our sins.” He will take care of our sinful, tried and tempted selves, if we trust ourselves to Him.

Grace indeed tis a charming sound, harmonius to the ear. We say the word a lot but often forget its glorious riches. I love D.L Moody's simple form of writing. Especially as it relates to matters grace.

In surprisingly clear English, given the era it was written, D. L. Moody explains the concepts of Grace and its inherent forms - prevenient (God seeking us), justifying (God saving us through His Son), and sanctifying (God making us more like Him through His Holy Spirit). Moody uses Biblical references and real-world stories to support his illustrations. Many books written in the late 1800's are difficult to read because of the heaviness of the language, but I found Sovereign Grace to be simple and straight-forward, and Moody makes tremendous wonderfully clear parallels between Old Testament and New Testament Grace. The last part of the book is presented in three dialogues about the Christian existence between Moody and a pastor (different clergy each time). It was a delight to read from beginning to end.

God gives us Grace

I chose the 5 star excellent writing from Pastor Moody. He tells us what Grace is how we get our free gift from God. He has interviewed another minister ask him questions and helps someone who isn't saved come to Christ. Uses very simple vocabulary so a person cam understand. Excellent writing.
