A Handful of Poorly Categorized Recipes

As someone who loves to read cookbooks almost like novels, unfortunately, I'm usually disappointed with cookbooks put out by self-published authors. This cookbook is no exception. Before the recipes, a brief chapter talks a little about the DASH diet, but the information felt generic, and I didn't get a sense of the author's voice. Some statements were just bizarre, like that the traditional foods of Kerala fit well within the parameters of the DASH diet. The writing is also stilted with many grammatical and punctuation errors, making it tedious to read.

But the recipes themselves had more issues, unfortunately. The book only divides recipes into a few categories: appetizers, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. But where a recipe was classified is random. It had whole-wheat pancakes for dessert and a tuna sandwich for breakfast! Ummm, yah, no. The subtitle of the book makes you think this book has 365 recipes, but I doubt it has even a hundred. The recipes themselves are problematic in several ways. Each has a photo, but the photo doesn't necessarily go with the recipe itself. For instance, a recipe that had a pineapple mixture placed on top of salad greens showed no salad greens in the picture. Another dish that had no basil appeared to have a basil garnish. As happens far too often in cookbooks by self-publishers, the ingredient lists are not in the order they appear in the directions—a massive fault in cookbooks, to my view. Unfortunately, too, sometimes ingredients appeared in the ingredient list but not in the directions. A smart and experienced cook could probably figure out how to incorporate them, but that certainly is a pain, and it may frustrate beginning cooks. Not all recipes seemed congruent with a healthy diet; many recipes in this book seem to have too much sugar to be deemed healthy for any diet. I think the DASH diet is wonderfully healthful, but this cookbook’s recipes don’t exploit the many possibilities of the DASH diet. There are certainly better cookbooks with recipes for the DASH diet than this one. I recommend you find another.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I am a fan of the Dash Diet and follow it for my health. This is a great book to have because it provides some amazing recipes for lowering blood pressure and losing body fat. They are healthy and cost-effective recipes that are easy to follow, and the ingredients are easily found. This is another great book to have for your home library for reference.

Very good and easy to make recipes in this book. Nothing too fancy, which is good, as all ingredients can easily be found at the local supermarket. I like that the nutritional info in included with each recipe too.
