Savage Art: 20th Century Genre and the Artists that Defined It

Rate this book
Savage Art showcases the popular period illustration which prefigured and helped create the violent visual language in today's popular aboveground cinema, comic books, and ultra-violent multi-million copy video games. Featuring disturbing illustration by pulp artists Walter Baumhofer, Rafael de Soto, Jerome Rozen, and others, this beautifully produced full-color collection documents Depression-era masculine violence, in fantasy and reality, as depicted on the covers of popular literature.

A delightful selection of cover art from the era of the pulps. Some particularly good examples from the biggest and most prolific names from the late 1920’s through the 1930’s. Contains an introductory essay and then just short of 100 full-size original paintings uncovered by the magazine wording.

An excellent collection of pulp covers. I only wish a full list of the titles and publication dates had been included.

Fantastic reproductions of original pulp art, unfortunately the editors don’t specify which pulp covers they were used for.
