I found this book in a used bookstore in Oxford and loved it. Intellectually satisfying but also pastoral and inspiring. Presents Jesus in a compelling and beautiful way.
A rather mixed read - some parts of it were encouraging, faith-affirming and mildly challenging, whereas other bits were dull and a bit patronizing, although perhaps they would not have come across that way to someone who is exploring faith or a 'new Christian'. Having got to the end I then discovered the 'group study' questions and realized how much better this book would have been if the existence of the questions had been flagged up much earlier (on the cover?!), if they had been attached to the chapters to which they related, and if they had been expanded into perhaps a second for 'personal reflection and meditation'. It was definitely a book written by a priest which for me means it is just a little too 'rose-tinted spectacles' with regard to the established church and the centrality of its role in faith - some of us are excited by Jesus despite the church! It probably would be a good book for a group to work through together, if only the publishers had made that more obvious!
