When I was a very young child still in elementary school, my parents surprised me with a floppy-eared rabbit on Easter Day, and I fell in love with her from the very beginning. For the rest of my childhood, I became obsessed with rabbits and bunnies, going so far as to go by the nickname “Bunny Boy” throughout elementary school! Part of my obsession with rabbits included reading books about them, including fiction and nonfiction. Some of my favorite children's books at the time had rabbits as protagonists or the main subject, and 101 Fact About Rabbits was one of them.
101 Facts About Rabbits is a very basic book aimed at children, so this is not the most in-depth book about pet rabbit care. However, this simplicity works to its advantage, for its brief facts and abundance of rabbit pictures are sure to entertain and educate any kid whose interests lie with pet rabbits. Speaking from experience, this was one of my favorite books as a child, for I would always refer to it in order to take the best care of my first pet rabbit, Flopsy. At my elementary school, I would constantly check this book out to read, re-read, and admire the cute pictures inside. I practically owned the copy of this book at my school's library back then, such was the amount of time I dedicated to it!
The facts contained in this book range from general information on rabbits and some historical context on owning rabbits as pets, to the actual care of your pet rabbit and tips on how to ensure they receive the greatest quality of life. As a brand new rabbit owner at the time, this book was a godsend to me, as it provided me with everything I could ever want to know about taking care of my pet without having to be a professional animal caretaker or advanced reader who needed to read complex books on rabbit care. As I was only around six years-old at the time, 101 Facts About Rabbits was very accessible to me and made owning a pet rabbit far more enjoyable and a bit easier overall. I remember going around to my siblings and parents espousing some of these facts to them with this sense of authority on the subject of owning and caring for rabbits, which made me feel important and responsible despite being so young at the time. If this book taught me nothing else, it helped me learn the value of responsibility in regards to owning a pet of any kind.
Though I may not have any pet rabbits anymore, I can attest to this book's worth to any young rabbit owner. 101 Facts About Rabbits is the perfect book for young children looking to become a rabbit expert and take the best care of their beloved pet. I credit this book for helping me expand my love for rabbits at such a young age and helping me to become the go-to guy in my family and at school for all-things rabbit related. This is definitely a must-read for children with a new pet rabbit or those looking to get one in the future.
