The Featral: The Advancement of Warfare

The year is 2109. Socrates had been genetically manipulated from birth, as was all his kind. The T.S. gene had made them superior in many ways. Their reflexes were faster, their vision superior, their skin able to adapt to harsh elements and their use more lethal. Which is why the WAEU raised them to fight their wars, particularly against the advancements of Mandarin robots and drones. The gene also had an effect on their appearance. Their skin tone tinged blue, as did their hair and nails. But what made them fearful to look at was the moist blue discoloration of their eyeballs to where their irises and pupils could not be seen.
As team leader of a Special Ops team of Featral, Socrates was called upon to lead his team to secure a vital facility from capture. To succeed, his team would have to rely on the skill of a female Featral fighter pilot who had no fear of taking risks. As the mission proceeds, he and his team discover the atrocities that formed their origins and learn that Socrates was more unique than first thought.

The Featral by Bobby Wayne is the first installment in a gripping military science-fiction series. I was glad I picked up a copy for a number of reasons. The main character Socrates is a member of a genetically-enhanced group of soldiers known as the Featral. In Wayne’s futuristic world the Western Alliance and European Union deliberately manipulated the T.S. gene to produce a race of brings superior to your garden-variety humans in many ways. During so-called training exercise the reader becomes aware that Socrates and others are less like soldiers, more like disposable clumps of flesh. Valuable but certainly expendable. Ours is not to wonder why, ours is just to do or die .During a top-secret mission Socrates and his team discover a warehouse where they learn of experiments performed on Featral subjects with a complete disregard for Featral life. Ohhhh….I get it!
I loved every aspect of this novel, beginning with the cover that is perfectly attuned to the sci-fi genre. My attention was attracted by the violent insect bots LOCUST army. The intro was gut-punching and the pacing kept me involved from page one to the cliffhanger ending (which I will not reveal!). The plot reminded me of The Eugenics War in the original Star Trek series. I would highly recommend this book to lovers of futuristic sci-fi with plenty of food for thought!
