I must have worn out the copy of Apple Staff & Silver Crown that was at Scottlea Public School in St. Catharines. I bought my own copy when I went to high school and have read it every year or two ever since (a long time, trust me). Irmengarde, the scrub-maid, discovers herself and that she's not "just a scrub-maid" in a journey that takes her far away from the castle she calls home, and then back again. The Prince, whom she played with as a child, also makes a changing journey. There are themes of duty, self sufficiency and the importance of education. There are a couple of scenes that might be frightening for younger children, but overall a good family read.
