The amthāl or parables of Luqman, like the fables of Æsop, use short stories with animals as their protagonists to highlight weak points in human nature. They are written in a very straightforward way using the simplest possible language, and for this reason they are often used as practice reading material for beginners in Arabic. The traditional collection of Luqman’s amthāl contains about four dozen parables. Twenty-five of those stories appear in the present edition, which is designed for the use of English speaking students of Arabic. Each fable is presented in Arabic complete with vowel points and is placed alongside a fairly literal English translation.
