John's Gospel gives more details about people, times and places than the other three gospels combined. His purpose was to assure readers that he was an eyewitness and that they could have confidence that Jesus was the Christ. Under Paul Barnett's guide 21st century readers will appreciate the geographical, historical and cultural details that authenticate John's Gospel.
Paul invites us to read the story sensitively and prayerfully to hear the voice of God speaking through the text. With John he urges readers to see that Jesus is the Messiah and follow him.
Paul Barnett, former Anglican Bishop of North Sydney, Australia, is a Visiting Fellow in Ancient History at Macquarie University and Teaching Fellow at Regent College, Vancouver and Moore College, Sydney. He is a frequent traveler to Israel, where Christianity began, and to Turkey and Greece, to which it rapidly spread.
An accessible and engaging commentary equally ideal for general and academic interests.
Barnett communicates the deep and sometimes confusing theological truths in John's gospel into everyday language without compromising on fact. I particularly enjoyed his focus on evidence for the historical veracity of John's eyewitness account and his explanation of why 8:1-11 is gospel but it doesn't belong in John's gospel.
A compelling and enjoyable read. Best digested 1-2 chapters a day after reading the corresponding scriptures.
