William James Joseph Lombardy was an American chess grandmaster, chess writer, teacher, and Catholic priest. He was one of the leading American chess players during the 1950's and 1960's.
Really like the progression of teaching the pieces with their own "games" that works up to the real game. Good example games teach both notation and some strategy.
I’ve never been much of a chess player, so when my five year old unexpectedly became obsessed with the game, I knew I needed some ideas for how to help him learn while keeping it fun. This book introduces a progression of pawn games in a very accessible way, with diagrams clear enough that my non-reader quickly grasped them and started explaining the scenarios to me.
This is the book I used to teach Chess to over 300 elementary school aged kids during my days as an Elementary School Librarian. Lombardy lays out his method clearly and simply, and includes Chess notations for following along with simple openings and gameplay.
