I got this trapping handbook while I was at Fur Trapper's training camp back in March at the refuge for the predator control. (Caught some coons and a muskrat! )
This book had great information on the fur bearer species and how to handle their hides and their values in the Fur Trade. Also loved the lists of traps and how to set them. There's a huge science to trapping, and this books tells you the habits of animals that you aim to catch. Setting a coon set is much different than a bobcat set or a coyote/wolf set. While opposers to trapping like to claim that trappers set traps up carelessly, that isn't the case, and if they read this book, they'll come to realize that there's nothing easy about catching some of these animals. Bobcats require psyical eye appeal to even show an interest in a trap, so you have to make it "pretty" with a dead rabbit or chicken's wing. You also learn that legholds are not as brutal as PETA claims. I've seen legholds personally and they do not maim the paw or twist it off, as traps have multi swivels to prevent limb loss (and many have padding on them nowdays).
Anyways, this book is incredibly helpful and will be using it when I start my first trapping season this winter. Aiming for weasel and foxes :)
This book has really helped me on the art of trapping. It teaches you hide handling, traps size, and the habitat of each animal. I would recommend this book to the beginner trapper or the experienced. It also taught me about ethics of trapping. One thing I know now is when is the best time to trap each animal for fur. It also taught me what kind of sets for each animal.
This is a really good book for people that like to trap. The book tells you about every animal that you will trap and what traps to use. I think it is a really helpful book.
