Old Q.'s daughter was Maria Emily, a very rich young lady, who married the equally rich 3rd Marquess of Hertford. They had three children, and this book traces the history of this eccentric and extraordinary family and their descendants, both legitimate and illegitimate. The family are probably best remembered today for the collection of pictures and 'ojets d'art' known as the Wallace Collection, which was left to the nation by the 4th Marquess through his friend Richard Wallace. As well as being an absorbing story, the book is of great interest to the social historian. It reveals the fascinating characters and eccentrics on the grand scale who made up "high society" in the nineteenth century. It has been called "a glittering story, emphatically sordid," a comment which is perhaps as true of the book as of the period in which it is set.
