Sweet, independent, and sixteen, Carly Martin loves solving puzzles. With her Vietnamese best friend Soon Tek Ahn (also called Sandy), she discovers that life in Tucson, Arizona is more exciting than she could have imagined.
When Carly has the chance to take a short trip to Phoenix, she jumps at it so she can spend some time with her boyfriend Patch, who's working all summer at a dude ranch. As usual, Carly's natural curiosity gets the better of her and she accidentally discovers that Nancy and Ned Chute, the couple who run a tour to the ranch, and their young son Ben, are being threatened by two dangerous thugs.
Although the Chutes are afraid to clue Carly in, they're obviously in trouble. An Carly loses no time in trying to help them out--getting long distance advice from Sandy and taking chances no one else will.
