If you have missed Karan Thapar's artilces in HT either because you were not born or were too young to understand or read or your interest developed late or for any other reason, then please read this book. A nice one!!
This book gives an insight about many things revolving around journalist and journalism, namely what's going on in a journalist's mind, what make a journalist that he is, how we see journalism and what important roles do these people play in various aspects.
It's a collection of his columns and each column will leave you wanting for more.
I loved the book, Karan's style of writing, narrating. He shows that there's more to journalist's life than what we see. He shows how different dignitaries come across onscreen and off screen. I loved the section where he has penned his cross border experiences and the section where he represents the current picture of press and media.
This is one book that I'll read again, and may be even a third time. Each chapter has no strings attached.
Karan Thapar is know for his hard hitting uncomfortable questions.I heard many people call him obnoxious gentlemen(Revisit the best bad word that comes to your mind). However, what really pulled my attention towards this man is the Intelligence covered beneath the white hair and words that come from the mouth.
This book is totally a new revelation to me as I have come to know the Witty side of him and the way he admired the English People (hate it or love it,he is correct in this opinion AFAIK). Finally book really pulls your attention and for sure makes you laugh.Must read and deserves to be in library.
Karan Thapar has set a list of views on his book that gives us a look from politics to celebs. He has a way of justifying himself in each set of topics which ‘appears’ to be an act in my viewpoint.
I didn’t enjoy this book as his viewpoints felt biased to me. He expresses his feelings and talks about various encounters he has faced in the stages of journalism, It brings a sight in my views that he’s well-manipulative to get his things done. Instead, of being on the neutral side of being a journalist, he's appearing to be taking sides.
I believe each news channel is special in its way and bashing other channels and promoting ‘HindustanTimes’ alone doesn’t give good clarity in the eyes of a reader. They have specific segmentation and target viewers to reach, if only argumentative and aggressiveness was expressed for other channels.
Here is a glorious collection of vignettes that take turns inducing a chuckle, opening your eyes to some wondrous detail, amusing you, sparking your curiosity, prompting introspection, startling you with the author’s prescience, sating your thirst for salty (if the title hasn’t given it away, yet!) sarcasm, amazing you with his honesty, or, impressing you with a deft expression.
The book chugs along at a brisk place and would be a perfect companion during a train journey!
Coming from a man with an incisive style that can sometimes border on the annoying, this collection showcases the amiable shade of Thapar’s personality. And it doesn’t fail to charm the reader.
A series of selected best articles by “the Karan Thapar”. These are the articles that appeared as a column on Sunday in the Hindustan Times for a period of 11 years.
The book takes you through quick articles on different chapters in Karan’s life- his school, his marriage, his job, his interviews with celebrities and politicians, his parents etc.
They are witty and sharp and also contain some of his eccentricities. His love and flair of the English language can be seen throughout and he also doesn’t hesitate to mention his likeness for the language
On interviews, how could a person answer KT's questions by looking straight into eyes? Its just makes you stammer irrespective of how confident you are in your speech. His tone, his expression, his modulation of the language is the reason for such an impact.
He had shown his little human side (trust me, he has! - off the interview shows though) in his writings in this book. I'd recommend you to give it a try.
Btw, my first exposure to Karan Thapar is his interviewing of JJ. (You know who is JJ), and this incident is also included in this book n that's my favorite chapter :)
A series of articles by one of the major talk show hosts of India. Very well articulated and very well written, something that is expected of him.
In the subtle humour in some of them and the subtlety in most of them, one can definitely get a feel for the Oxford background in the language.
As he has rightly said his political biases do come out in some of the articles. He has also exposed some of his personal details, which one may not normally know unless one has specifically looked up for them.
This guy Karan Thapar maybe Gandhi family's stooge but he writes excellently. He stories are interesting, witty and full of subtle humour. This book in particular is the kind of book you would love to read in one go!
conclusions of the premises are too obvious....would have loved a bit of depth in the stories...but again these are self experiences. So not much to complain.
