100 Jahre, nachdem Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus ikonischer Vampirfilm in Berlin seine Uraufführung erlebte, hat der auf Bram Stokers Roman »Dracula« basierende Horrorfilmklassiker nichts von seiner unheimlichen Wirkung eingebüßt. Die Surrealisten liebten diesen Film, auch in der Populärkultur hat er weitreichende Spuren hinterlassen. »Phantome der Nacht. 100 Jahre Nosferatu« ist eine Ausstellung, die neben der Entstehungsgeschichte und Rezeption erstmals umfassend die vielfältigen Verflechtungen des Filmes mit der bildenden Kunst beleuchtet.

Jürgen Müller ist ein deutscher Kunsthistoriker.

Müller holds the chair of Early Modern and Modern Art History at the Technical University of Dresden. He studied art history at the universities of Bochum, Münster, Pisa, Paris and Amsterdam, and has worked as an art critic and curated numerous exhibitions. He is also the editor of TASCHEN’s movies by decade series.

Großartiger Katalog zur aktuellen Nosferatu-Ausstellung, in deren Mittelpunkt der bekannte Stummfilm steht. Es werden zudem Motive wie Spinnen, Vampire, Golem und Fledermäuse beleuchtet, Verbindungen zum Surrealismus hergestellt, Bilder und Grafiken von Alfred Kubin, Hugo Steiner-Prag und vielen mehr eingebettet. Die Gestaltung des Katalogs ist ebenfalls sehenswert – wie das Cover schon zeigt, die richtige Kombi aus düster und grell.

Ich kann es kaum erwarten, die Ausstellung zu sehen, muss mich aber noch etwas gedulden, weil ich zusammen mit einer Freundin hin will, die erst im März Zeit hat.

Meine Sommerurlaubsplanung hat der Katalog auch schon beeinflusst, weil GR-Freund Gavin mich darauf aufmerksam machte, dass der Film teilweise in Wismar gedreht wurde. Also habe ich gleich eine Unterkunft in Wismar und eine Stadtführung auf Spuren des Films gebucht...

Torn between a 4 or 5 ★ rating because I couldn't actually read it as I can't speak German (all I remember from a trip there as a teenager many moons ago now is how to order a beer, to say I don't like cheese and a few swear words). Wish I could read it though (or that it also contained English text as some exhibition catalogues/art books do) as it looks like it'd be really interesting reading also. But I knew it was in German bought it for the art, wanting a collection of Albin Grau works. I was not disappointed as in addition to Grau's art and stills from the film there's a lot of other Romantic, Symbolist, Decadent and Expressionist art in there with Alfred Kubin and Hugo Steiner-Prag particularly given a good showing. So it looks fantastic and I imagine that the text will be intriguing too.
