Rate this book
Public Health 101 provides a big-picture, population perspective on the determinants of health and disease and the tools available to protect and promote health. It examines the full range of options for intervention including use of the health care system, the public health system, and society-wide interventions such as laws and taxation. Students will learn how public health affects them in their everyday lives. Using case studies, vignettes, and extensive examples, they will learn and apply frameworks for thinking about the issues of public health. They will gain a deeper understanding about the health news they hear, the web sites they visit, and the research they read.

This book is dumbed down to such a degree that it gives false information, particularly on statistic associations on HIV/AIDs contraction and circumcision, sexual orientation and sexual practices. It was painful to read. It actually gives a definition of data and rates, not only in the text but also included in the glossary. If it's expected readers need data defined, you may want to rethink having them take a course in such a globally important subject as public health.

It has a problem expressing the differences between correlation and causation that need to be dealt with immediately!

A fantastic introduction into America's public health system. The author covers the primary topics in public health, and offers multiple examples and case studies to assist with learning. Each chapter is short, but information-dense.
