Philosophy has a way of taking questions we think we already understand and turning them completely upside down. Pathways in Philosophy: An Introductory Guide with Readings by Dale Jacquette is a wonderful reminder that philosophy isn't simply about memorizing the ideas of famous thinkers—it's about learning how to question, reason, and look at the world from different perspectives.

What I appreciated most about this book is that it encourages readers to think for themselves. Rather than simply telling us what to believe, philosophy asks us to examine our assumptions and consider why we believe what we believe.

The readings introduce important philosophical ideas while giving readers the opportunity to wrestle with questions that have challenged humanity for centuries: What makes something right or wrong? What is truth? What does it mean to live a good life? Do we really have free will? What can we actually know?

And honestly, those aren't questions that always have comfortable answers—which is exactly what makes philosophy so fascinating.
