About the author

Barchelle (“Chelly”) Bolger Wathen is an author and storyteller with a deep love for faith, family, and canines. She shares the inspiring stories of her beloved shepherd/wolfdog rescue, Shayla. A native San Diegan now living in Prescott, Arizona, Chelly enjoys life with her husband, George, and their “fur kids,” Shayla and rescued rez husky, Tayen.

Chelly holds a Master of Public Administration degree and built a respected career as a senior paralegal with the San Diego City Attorney’s Office; currently as a State Ombudsman Specialist. Throughout her professional life—whether drafting legal documents, grant proposals, or academic papers—writing was always her passion. Now she devotes that passion to telling Shayla’s story, and ultimately, God’s story.

Her first published book, "Shayla & Friends", shares the unforgettable true journey of Shayla, an adventurous dog who traveled from a Christian orphanage in Ukraine to her forever family in America. The story highlights how love, courage, and faith can transform a life. Chelly also writes "Shayla’s Adventure", a series of fictional children’s books for all ages that celebrate friendship and the joy of discovery. Most recently, "Shayla & Friends: Into the Light" continues Shayla’s fictional journey for teen and young adult readers.

When she isn’t writing, Chelly volunteers with local animal rescue groups and enjoys exploring God’s creation with George, their dogs, and friends—whether kayaking, ziplining, or hiking mountain trails. Every adventure becomes another story waiting to be told.

Delightful Children's Book
This is a wonderful story that teaches children about friendship and adventure. It has beautiful illustrations. It's nicely paced and sure to bring joy and wonder to any child.
