A group of mercenaries arrive on the remote desert world of Talomin and proceed to massacre the small complement of people inhabiting the scientific station there. What is the nature of the cargo the mercenaries then remove from the station and load aboard their shuttle?
On the Ukrainian colony planet of Korda Andreas the population of a major city is being decimated by an unknown plague, one which drives its unfortunate victims into a state of violent rage. The armed forces of several European nations arrive to enforce a ruthless quarantine on the affected populace, intent on containing the infection whatever the cost in human life.
And meanwhile, on an asteroid housing a top-secret American intelligence-gathering facility, an analyst is tasked with getting to the bottom of what is rapidly turning into a major political and military emergency.

And while all this is going on, the huge and soon-to-be-redundant space freighter SS Amazon Queen is departing her refuelling stop at planet Nalsos 3. She is on a regular supply run around the isolated Rim colonies, but on this occasion her commanding officer has been inveigled into giving passage to a group of some two hundred passengers, including the influential US Governor Jordan Cordell and a security operative named Nick Thorn. Captain Ewan Kemble soon discovers to his intense annoyance that the former is a thoroughly slippery customer, while the latter is a brash and supremely confident individual. But when a distress call from another vessel is received, Kemble finds his ship, his passengers, and himself, plunged into the midst of a conspiracy that may possibly result in the annihilation of most of human civilisation. Can Kemble and his crew, including Chief Engineer Roz Comino, survive what could just turn out to be their very - Last Run?
