Have been in a discipleship group going through this book for several months. Te only reason why I haven't completed it is because we are discussing chapter to chapter. It is the best thing I've read to explain true discipleship based on the Great Commission. I've been fortunate enough having gotten to meet the author a couple times. Get your hands on this book.
this book!!! insane! read it! read it slow! read it twice! and then again and again. so much good stuff in here and brought so many things to light that I hadn’t thought of. why does our savior call us to rest? because we are laboring and toiling for HIM not for us. we are so exhausted and tired from sharing our faith with those around us that we HAVE to rest in Him so we can continue our ministry. missionaries came back to their home church “one church member stood and said, ‘weren’t you afraid you would die over there?’ the calculated answer of the husband was, ‘no because we DIED BEFORE WE WENT.’”
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is meant to disrupt your current patterns and ways of viewing the Great Commission. These revelations and ideals are not meant to end with the reading of this book, but are to be implemented for a changed vision and lifestyle. If you’re curious about the title of the book, all I can say is you must read the book it in its entirety and absorb what is being laid out. It’s a must read!
This book was gifted to me by someone I look up to, I met on a medical missions trip. I loved a couple concepts, and was mostly thorough in its explanations. However, there are some hot takes that are his interpretation of scripture I can not see, and he at times will put down aspects of Christianity in an effort to highlight others that are needed. That way of illuminating solutions is not one I enjoy. Additionally it does not appear he treats the word of God as inerrant.
That said, there are some useful thoughts.
I liked how it talked through the New Testament as a series of letters in an effort to disciple, I liked how it emphasized the importance of discipleship and what is learned and gained from both sides of that model, and there are some summaries of biblical disciple models presented in scripture. I would just tread lightly when recommending this book to new believers (which sadly seems to be the target audience).
Rated: A What a command of God's Word! Hodges makes a compelling case for why all believers should be disciple-makers who develop disciples who are disciple-makers -- not just in your on neighborhood or church but to the world at large. Brilliant yet personal exposition.
It truly is a very eye-opening book. My word of caution is that Herb Hodges clearly does not believe in the inerrant Word of God and corrects the scriptures multiple times. However, every Christian should read this book!
Herb addresses discipleship and evangelism and its utter importance. A great reminder about our mandate of world impact. Gives great ideas for true discipleship. A must read for any Christian that wants to be more motivated in their walk with Christ.
read this one! explains discipleship with scripture after scripture. you'll learn a lot, and you're eyes will be opened to a whole new way of thinking about building disciples.
One of the best books on discipleship I have read. Herb Hodges uses scripture after scripture to make the command of making disciples come alive in this book.
Great description of Jesus' mandate for discipleship. A bit pithy at times, but packed with sermons upon sermons worth of info and Biblical exogenous, as well as illustrations.
