This richly illustrated survey of the history of Irish painting encompasses the entire span from the middle ages to the mid-twentieth century. The book includes both well-known and virtually unknown artists, Irish artists who worked abroad as well as in Ireland, and major foreign artists who came to Ireland and worked there for extended periods. Among the more than 350 works reproduced in full color are many paintings from notable private collections which have not been exhibited to the public.

Author Biography: Anne Crookshank is Fellow Emerita, formerly professor of the history of art, at Trinity College Dublin. She is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy. The Knight of Glin is Doctor in Letters Honoria Causa of Trinity College Dublin; president of the Irish Georgian Society; director of the Irish Architectural Archive; and Christie's representative in Ireland.

I was surprised at the subject matter for so many of the paintings. I was expecting more religious subjects. Jonathan Fisher's works were a pleasant surprise. I had never heard of him before. I also enjoyed Frederick William Burton's painting, Helellil and Hildebrand.
