About the author

Kuntowijoyo was born at Sanden, Bantul, Yogyakarta. He graduated from UGM as historian and received his post-graduated at American History by The University of Connecticut in year 1974, and gained his Ph.D. of history from Columbia University in year 1980.

His father was a puppet master (dalang) and he lived under deep religious and art circumstances. He easily fond of art and writings and became a good friend of Arifin C. Noer, Syu'bah Asa, Ikranegara, Chaerul Umam, and Salim Said.

His first work was "Kereta Api yang Berangkat Pagi Hari".

In this book, Kuntowijoyo brings a number of dimensions in which history can be written and need to be closely scrutinized such as oral history (read Herodotus and Gregor Schoeler), history of religion (read Karen Armstrong and Bruinessen), history of economy, social history, quantitative history, biography (read Malcolm X, Gandhi and Pramoedya), history of city (read Toynbee and Mumford), history of village, women history, cultural history (read Fernand Braudel and Jacques Barzun), history of politics, history of thought (Collingwood is a prerequisite read) and lastly mental history (on how Stalin's tyranic father and dogmatic lifestyle of priest greatly affected him and how popular art like music has a vast audience in comparison with books publication).
