Julius Kambarage Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, was a Pan-Africanist and an internationalist, and this book includes contributions from leading commentators—those who worked and fought imperialism alongside Nyerere, members of a younger generation, and Nyerere in his own words. The writings reflect on Nyerere and liberation, the Commonwealth, leadership, economic development, land, human rights, and education. Above all, they are a testament to the growing recognition of the need to rekindle the fires of African socialism to which Nyerere was deeply committed.
"Africa's Liberation: The Legacy of Nyerere." There are 16 different chapter authors, all Africans but widely varied in background and perspective. Julius Nyerere, who died in 1999, has long been a political hero of mine. Tanzania's first President, an enlightened and creative good man. The populace called him Mwalimu - "The Teacher." Not perfect, as some of the essays show, but a fearless opponent of the neo-liberal economic policies of the US and Europe, who under guise of the IMF and World Bank have long used the excuse of free markets to steal and plunder the natural resources of Africa. A good book to get background on this sad history. I commend this book to you. Might be hard to find (I ordered it used,) Pambazuka Press out of Kampala, Uganda.
