Dandy collection of vintage cartoons that origially ppeared in Playboy. I don't know whether the magazine remains one of the premiere publishers of cartoons, but back in the 1950s, Playboy must have been a leader in the field, if this sampling is any indication. There's an impressivle diversity of style on display here, from the cartoony thorugh the illustrative and the lushly painted. Several of the cartoonists, including ones I don't recall having heard of before, have distinctive styles--one can recognize instantly that one has seen this cartoonist's work before; sometimes one can even recognize the same characters reappearing. A bonus discovery for me was three cartoons from Jack Davis. I did not realize he had ever done panel gags. These are not the standouts in this collection, but they are in a way revelatory. There is of course a preponderance of sexual humour, but there is also quite a rang eof other topics. and what a list of cartoonists! Silverstein, Feiffer, Wilson, Cole--generously represented, and subject of the dedication--as well as many others whose names I did not recognize but who had equally distinctive styles and wit. Great stuff.
