Donor Girl: A Story of Living Kidney Donation

In 2006 I volunteered to save a life. My brother in law (sister's husband) went into kidney failure and was told he needed a kidney transplant within the year. I immediately volunteered to get tested, only to be shocked that I was a match. For the next 9 months, we went through a series of ups and downs and tests until on July 11, 2007, I donated my kidney to David. This is my story of the emotions and feelings that went along with the medical tests. This is my story of saving a life.

I read this book in 2 days! That says a lot because I rarely find the time to read these days and I picked it up and barely put it down. I thought I would like reading a book by Lee Adams because I read her blogs and find them quite entertaining. Her writing style flows easily. I also happen to have known Lee since elementary school so reading this book felt like I was getting a glimpse into a part of her life I knew little about considering we’ve not been in contact much since High School, only a few class reunions. I always liked Lee and even more so now!

I found it interesting how she mixed in the technical details of organ donation with her own feelings about. Sometimes she was brutally honest and even a little vain and funny when she worried about how the scars would show in a bikini. That’s real life, most would think it, she just said it out loud! I also enjoyed how she shared the details of her personal and professional life to show how she managed her day to day life and the process of organ donation.
It was an amazing and generous act on her part. I think this book will be a great help to anyone who is going through it and their families as well. I found myself thinking about a subject I can’t say I ever considered. Would I give up an organ to a friend or family member? I probably would . I’m looking forward to reading Lee’s other books.

Donor Girl by Lilli Adams is the author's story of her kidney donation to her sister's husband. Adams takes the reader on her journey from the initial knowledge that her brother- in- law needs a kidney transplant to her testing and discovering she is a match to being a willing donor to surgery to recovery. It is an honest story of her emotions, fear, and sacrifice. Adams talks of her hesitation and worries. She also discovers through this process that God is bigger than herself, God is in control, and that her life has purpose outside of herself. Though a part of her body is gone, Adams has been given a gift of purpose. Hopefully this book will encourage readers to enlist as an organ donor at the time of their death, and be a blood donor now during their life.

LOVED LOVED this book! With an intelligent and humorous approach, I was walked through the donation process but more importantly welcomed into the life of the main character.
The presentation welcomes the reader in immediately and walks us through a world of medicine with great ease. With funny antedotes we learn to understand any medical Jargon. But this is not a story of medicine. No, this is a love story. We learn about the love of a sister as she donates her kidney. We learn about love of life and thanks to Lilli, the author, we smile are way through it all. I have bought several and given them as gifts. I highly recommend this book.

Very nicely done Lee. As a kidney disease patient myself, it was a very heartwarming story to read of your selfless even tough you really did not want to be the donor at first you knew what had to be done and did it. So glad everything has worked out for you and Dave.

Interesting read about a woman who donated her kidney to her brother-in-law. She shared both her fears and joys with a great sense of humor.

Good description of the turmoil and emotion that goes into being a live donor, but could have done without the book being so overly faith based.
