About the author

Hannah More was an English religious writer and philanthropist. She can be said to have made three reputations in the course of her long life: as a clever verse-writer and witty talker in the circle of Johnson, Reynolds and Garrick, as a writer on moral and religious subjects on the Puritanic side, and as a practical philanthropist.

A delightful insight to 18th century life and the struggles of poverty. Mrs. Jones, once wealthy but now poor, bemoaned her inability to help the poor as she once did, until her pastor encouraged her that help is not always simply money. She went about endeavoring to aid people change the household economy, which changed the parish economy. This little book documents her efforts and records a few recipes. Very interesting and insightful.
