Persephone Brown is frustrated and fed up with being small. One day she goes out into her garden and shouts, "I WANT TO BE BIG!" She's unaware that the moon that night would be a Wishing Moon... Her wish comes true, but Persephone quickly finds out that being big is not quite as she suspected.
It's quite a short read, for key stage 1 readers: Only a few tricky words, beside 'Persephone'. It's nicely illustrated, to help engage 'listeners', including a cheeky little kitten that pops up from time to time.
For such a simple tale there's plenty going on in it. I liked the way that Persephone's mother remains unconcerned by her daughter's sudden growth. (And asks her to give the upstairs windows a wipe, since she can reach.) The idea of a wishing moon, represented by a full moon (that talks back), is food for thought. And the decision that Persephone eventually reaches - that she was actually just the right size in the first place - results in a touching reunion between her and her mother at the end of the book.
Read this just because I read it as a kid, randomly remembered about it and fancied a trip down memory lane. Still kinda sweet. Only not leaving a rating because at 28, I don't think I fit into the target audience any more!
