Yusuf al-Qa'id (Arabic: يوسف القعيد) is an Egyptian writer, novelist, and former member of the Egyptian Parliament. Born in the village of Al-Dahiriya in Beheira Governorate, he served in the Egyptian armed forces from 1965 to 1974 and later worked as a literary editor at Al-Musawwar magazine, eventually becoming deputy editor-in-chief. He is best known for his novel War in the Land of Egypt (1978), which was named among the 100 best Arabic novels of the 20th century by the Arab Writers Union. The novel, set during the 1973 war, was banned for a period due to its criticism of government corruption and was later adapted into a film starring Omar Sharif. Al-Qa'id is also notable for writing in Egyptian vernacular Arabic, including his novel Laban el-Asfur (1994), considered one of the first major modern novels written in colloquial Arabic.
