The North Briton was a satiric weekly opposing the government of Lord Bute under the young King George III (the last monarch of the U.S.). Written and published by John Wilkes and Charles Churchill, the paper flourished for 45 weeks in 1762-63; No. 45 was ordered burned by the common hangman and Wilkes declared an outlaw, a response satire rarely achieves. I undertook this edition for my doctoral dissertation simply because I wished to read the paper and copies were not generally available. Even today, I note that a single copy of a paperback edition is available here for over $1,200: I can do better than that.
A very useful collection of Wilkes’s writings. He was a very influential (and under-appreciated) actor in the drive for civil liberties, and his writings are sometimes hard to find. This collection makes research on his writings much easier. Many thanks.
