John Anthony 'Tony' Carty is a legal scholar in Hong Kong, where he holds the Sir Y K Pao Chair Professorship of Public Law in the University of Hong Kong.
Carty formerly lectured in Public International Law at the University of Glasgow and served as Professor of Public Law in the University of Aberdeen.
Carty's research interests focus on international law, including e the theory of international law, human rights, the theory of autonomous nations within states, such as Scotland, the Basque Country etc. He is co-author of Power and Manoeuverability: International Implications of an Independent Scotland (1978).
Professor Anthony Carty visited Peking University in the spring semester of 2024 at the invitation of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Peking University. Prof. Anthony Carty received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1973. He has been Professor of Public International Law at the University of Aberdeen Law School, Sir Y. K. Pao Professor of Public Law at the University of Hong Kong, Zheng Yutong Chair Professor of Law at Tsinghua University Law School, and Professor of Public International Law at the School of Law of Beijing Institute of Technology, and he is one of the academics representative of the Western “Critical International Law” approach. His research interests focus on the theory of international law, the philosophy of international law and the history of international law. His representative works include: The Decline of International Law (1986/2019) Philosophy of International Law (2007/2017) History and Sovereignty in the South China Sea (2023)
