very rich with vivid anecdote.. many portraits of the fascinating personages of the court of James I.. really brought the Stuart period to life for me. And a special time it was! James I himself is very interesting - the combination of learnedness and weakness, of political reason with personal vanity and blindness, and the bizarre court in an age of brilliance and depraved profligacy is all made memorable in this chatty but mesmerizing book.
