"The Folk Art Counting Book" by Abby Watson, is not a good counting children's book. The illustrations are dull, and the objects counted are things most children aren't familiar with. It correctly counts the objects, and could be a great practice book for learning, but it does not help children learn how to count whatsoever. Children intensely look at objects when they count them, and since most the items in the story are ones children cannot easily identify, the counting theme is completely taken away. Children would find the book boring, and would end up putting it down before finishing. Adults are the only people who would take away from the interesting folk art objects that are being counted in the book. If children were forced to read this book, I would not recommend giving it to younger grades. I would use it as a history or art lesson for maybe fourth grade students.
