Back in the 1980s, we called the Snorks the Smurfs underwater. I don't remember loving the show, but I know I watched it on occasion. At least, unlike Smurfs, the snorks were each a different color and wore different outfits.
This story has some odd things about it. The premise is some snorks--cutesy, colorful, bug-eyed creatures with floating eyebrows and a tube that blows bubbles sticking out of their head like an elongated nostril--find a pearl. Turns out, the pearl is actually a mermaid princess whose magic crown was stolen by an evil witch who turned her into a pearl in said crown, but she fell out of the crown. For some inexplicable reason, the mermaid is drawn in a completely different style from the rest of the illustrations. I can't remember if the witch was the Snorks' nemesis, a sort of Gargamel of the sea. She's a stock bad guy who wants to pollute the ocean because she hates snorks. The snorks' pet octopus, Occy, steals back the crown rather easily. The witch, cursing the snorks, sets out to find another way to catch snorks (before, she wanted to drive them away, now she wants to catch them--her goal seems unclear.) The mermaid tells the snorks how to call on her if they ever need help. And then the story abruptly ends. It seemed like they were setting up a whole second act, but no. How disappointing. Perhaps there's a sequel....
