Lover of My Soul: Delighting in God's Passionate Love

Rate this book
Every person longs to be loved, to believe someone cares for them more than life itself. By weaving the rich imagery of a wedding throughout the text, in Lover of My Soul the reader is reminded that Christ the Bridegroom loves them deeply and completely - that He gave His life as payment for their eternal joy. In the same way every bride appears as a radiant beauty on her wedding day and every groom is handsome and strong, Christ presents His all-satisfying love to anyone who will take His hand in a spiritual marriage of the heart.

Took me so long to finish this book but it was still an amazing read regardless. Definitely a book to go back to and reread. Reading about God’s love is always a delight.

I loved every minute of this book. This book ministered to me with every chapter. God is good. He is healing every broken place. I am happy to call him my hero, my healer, and my Husband. I never thought to look at him in that way. But I am glad that by reading this book I can see he is indeed my first love and always has been. He is everything. I am in love with him and know he is madly in love with me. This was an eye opener. With every chapter I found myself praying and thanking God. That’s a good book, it drew me closer to my heavenly husband ❤️🥰

What can I say but to feel so loved by the One who came down to die for me. Indeed, I was pursued from the beginning; He noticed me first! This Bridegroom of mine will shield me from all harm and He's preparing a room for me in heaven.

Read this to catch a glimpse of this ultimate Lover.

I had high hopes for this book, and while parts of it were stunning (chapter 16, for example), I closed this book feeling disappointed. Honestly, I feel the author set himself up for failure. He chose to discuss a topic that, in essence, is a mystery. He tries to dissect a concept that cannot be dissected. He seeks to explain something that simply cannot be explained. His book is about God’s love, something that is so mysterious, so unexplainable, that it simply cannot be comprehended. And yet, that is exactly what Wright attempts - to un-mystify the mysterious. And in doing so, I feel Wright humanizes God’s love to the point that God’s love loses its holiness, its magnificence, its depth. God’s love is so humanized in this book, it is no longer God’s love Wright is describing. It’s man’s love attributed to God. And that’s a dangerous game to play. It’s not the author’s fault. It’s simply the cards he was dealt when he chose to write a book seeking to explain a concept that simply cannot be explained.

Beyond this book’s failure to express the reverence God’s love deserves, there are a few other issues I have:
- Multiple verses throughout this book are taken out of context, used to fit the point Wright is seeking to make. But we should never use the Bible to justify our man-made points. Rather, the Bible should be the force that designs our points.
- Some of the points Wright tries to make are not fully developed. They’re almost there, but just felt like they fell slightly short.
- Wright borrowed from some of the worst possible sources, including T.D. Jakes and Brennan Manning, both of whom are false teachers who do not teach a true Gospel. This, too, is a very dangerous game, as both of these men are sending people to hell.

Excellent, Excellent Book! This conveys the heart of God for His people--His deep, deep love for us! It really compels us to Him-goes back to the verse that says, "It's His kindness that leads us to repentance"--His love compels us. I may put this on my "to read" list sometime this year again, very worth it!

This is an incredible book for anyone that is passionate and ready to be swept away. It is written like a romance story starring you and God. It is such an incredible picture of how little we grasp of God's love for us.

This was a stunning look at the extraordinary love the King of the Universe has for his Bride. As a follower of Christ, I didn't really feel I had value until I read this book as a teenager; but then I finally saw myself through the eyes of a God who loves me beyond anything I could ever imagine.

My favorite chapter was about Hosea and Gomer, and the love with which Hosea pursued a wife who was unfaithful, uncertain, lost in her purpose, and wholly confused. What an encouragement for every Christian who has fallen off the path, aware of their failings and desperate to be free of shame, but uncertain of how to ever be worthy of love again. For those looking to rekindle their relationship with the Lord, read this book!
